California Giant Salamander
Dicamptodon ensatus
7-11 3/4" (17.8-30 cm). Robust and smooth-skinned. Brown to reddish-brown, with brown to gold mottling. Belly light brown to yellowish-white. No foot tubercles; 3 segments on 4th toe of hind foot. Costal grooves, 12-13, indistinct.

Arboreal Salamander
Aneides lugubris
4 1/4-7 1/4" (10.8-18.4 cm). Climbing; grayish to chocolate brown with oversized head. Cream or yellowish spots usually seen above; belly creamy-white. Tail somewhat prehensile (able to grip); toe tips expanded, squarish. 15-16 grooves along sides.

California Slender Salamander
Batrachoseps attenuatus
3-5 1/2" (7.6-14 cm). Elongated body and tail. Small narrow feet; only 4 toes. Sooty or black above, with broad yellow, brownish, or reddish band on black; colors vary with locality. Belly black or dusky, finely speckled with white. 18-22 grooves along sides.

Ensatina
Ensatina eschscholtzii
3-5 7/8" (7.6-14.9 cm). Only species with tail constricted at base, 5 toes on hind feet. Color varies: brown, reddish-brown, or black, with cream, yellow, or orange spots or mottling. Base of limbs lighter-colored than tips. Belly pale. 12-13 side grooves.

Rough-skinned Newt
Taricha granulosa
5-8 1/2" (13-23 cm). Warty skin, light brown to black above, with sharply contrasting yellow to orange belly. Breeding male temporarily develops smooth skin, swollen anus, compressed tail, and toes tipped with black horny layer. Small eyes; dark lower lids.

California Newt
Taricha torosa
5-7 3/4" (12.7-19.7 cm). Resembles Rough-skinned Newt but has larger eyes and light-colored lower eyelids. Tan to reddish-brown above, yellow to orange below. Back and belly colors blend. Breeding male has smooth skin, swollen vents...

Western Toad
Bufo boreas
2 1/2-5" (6.4-12.8 cm). Gray to green, with light-colored stripe down middle of back. Warts tinged with red and surrounded by black blotches. Male has pale throat. Oval glands behind eyes; lacks cranial crests.

Pacific Treefrog
Pseudacris regilla (Hyla regilla)
3/4-2" (1.9-5.1 cm). Skin rough; varies greatly from green to light tan to black, often with dark spots. Black stripe through eye and usually a dark triangle between the eyes. Large toe pads. Male has gray throat.

Foothill Yellow-legged Frog
Rana boylii
1 5/8-3" (3.9-7.5 cm). Gray to brown to olive, with light-colored band across top of head. Gray mottling may be present on back. No dark mask. Eardrum granular. Lower belly and underside of legs yellow. Toes fully webbed. Male has swollen, darkened thumbs.
