Pipevine Swallowtail
Battus philenor
2 3/4-3 3/8" (70-86 mm). Black to dark gray above with metallic blue, especially toward hindwing margin; hindwing above has row of yellow spots around rim. Hindwing below has row of orange spots curving through blue patch along margin and white marginal spots.

Pipevine Swallowtail Caterpillar
Battus philenor
A distinctive species, seldom found off food plant (various species of pipevine). Mature caterpillar, 1 7/8-2 1/8" (48-54 mm). Black with prominent fleshy red protuberances over entire length of body.

Pale Swallowtail
Papilio eurymedon
3-3 3/4" (76-95 mm). Pale cream with bold, broad black stripes and black borders above; hindwing borders spotted with cream, blue, and pale to bright orange. Wings less brightly colored below, with distinctive dark veins. 1 long black tail on each hindwing.

Two-tailed Swallowtail
Papilio multicaudata
3 3/8-5 1/8" (86-130 mm). Yellow with narrow black stripes. Hindwing edge above and below lined with blue patches; black border spotted with yellow and orange; between spots each wing points outward in series of partial tails, and 1 long and 1 medium tail.

Western Tiger Swallowtail
Papilio rutulus
2 3/4-3 7/8" (70-98 mm). Above and below, lemon-yellow with black tiger-stripes across wings and black yellow-spotted margins. 1-2 orange spots and several blue spots near black tail on hindwing; blue continuous all around outer margin of hindwing below.

Anise Swallowtail
Papilio zelicaon
2 5/8-3" (67-76 mm). More yellow than black. Above, band of straight-edged yellow spots in mid-forewing; hindwing flushed with blue above medium-long tail; orange eyespot with large, round, centered pupil. Similar below. Black abdomen has yellow side stripes.

Sara Orangetip
Anthocharis sara
1 1/4-1 5/8" (32-41 mm). Male white above, female white or yellow. Orange patch near forewing tip red-orange, sometimes paler; some have black and white bars, black margin outside orange patch. Below, paler patch on forewing; grass-green marbling on hindwing.

California Dogface
Colias eurydice
1 5/8-2 1/2" (41-64 mm). Male saffron-orange above; thick black forewing margin in poodle-head pattern (may have purplish sheen). Female pale yellow; faint or no forewing margin. Below, deep yellow or greenish with black forewing ring, silvery hindwing spots.

Orange Sulphur
Colias eurytheme
1 5/8-2 3/8" (41-60 mm). Above, gold-orange with pink blush; black borders (yellow spotted in female); black spot on forewing, red-orange spot on hindwing. Below, orange, yellow or greenish with 1 or 2 red-rimmed silvery spots in hindwing. Wings pink-fringed.
