Common Spiderwort Tradescantia ohiensis Ohio Spiderwort, Reflexed Spiderwort, Bluejacket
Description Common Spiderwort is a member of the spiderwort family (family Commelinaceae). Spiderworts are herbs with more or less swollen nodes, flowers arranged in clusters enveloped in boat-shaped bracts. Flowers: radially symmetrical; sepals 3; petals 3; stamens 6, the stalks often with colored hairs. All these parts attached at base of ovary. Leaves: alternate, simple, the base of each forming a tubular sheath around the stem. Fruit: capsule with 3 chambers.About 40 genera and 600 species are known, found mostly in tropical and subtropical regions. Dayflower, Wandering Jew, and Moses-in-a-boat are cultivated as ornamentals.
