A succulent plant with slender stems seeming to grow through middle of 1 circular leaf and topped by a raceme of tiny white flowers. Habit: native annual or perennial herb; stems spreading to erect, branched from base; variable appearance. Height: 2-20 in (5-50 cm). Leaf: at base, usually erect, sometimes in flattened rosette, elliptical to kidney-shaped, 0.5-3 in (1-7.5 cm) long, 0.2-2.5 in (0.5-6 cm) wide, stalked; on stem, one pair fused into single, circular to weakly square leaf blade to 4 in (10 cm) diameter; leaves turn red in summer. Flower: small, 5-parted, white or pink, to 0.5 in (12 mm) wide; in open or dense cluster of 5-40. Fruit: oval capsule to 0.15 in (4 mm) wide.
