Most animals are rust or tan-colored, with white rump patch and belly; winter pelage is darker and the spots are often indiscernible. The white spots on the back merge into a white line near the rump and there is a black or tan line on the back. Melanistic, very dark, and very light morphs are also known, and may predominate in domesticated herds.
