Family: Aristolochiaceae, Birthwort view all from this family

Description A low, evergreen herb, 3-6 in., the leaves generally triangular in outline. The solitary red-brown flowers are thick and fleshy, hidden under the leaves.

Habitat Moist to dry woods.

Range Florida to Louisiana, north on coastal plain to s. Virginia and inland to Tennessee.

Discussion Makes a good ground cover.
