Description Native herbaceous perennial.
Height: 1.5-5 ft (40-150 cm).
Leaf: very thin, 4-12 in (100-300 mm) long, to 1/10 in (2.5 mm) wide; smaller above.
Flower: long spike, to 20 in (50 cm) long, blooming from the top down; of tufted, pink to purple flowers.
Fruit: 1/8 in (3 mm) seed in fluffy sphere.
Flower August to November.
Habitat Longleaf pine savanna, mixed oak forest, pine scrub, sand hills, dunes, roadsides; also cultivated as an ornamental.
Range Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and Florida; at 30-300 ft (10-100 m).
