Description Tan, yellow or reddish brown stripe above with dark centre line with some blackish smudges on back. Rounded tail. 13-14 costal grooves.
Dimensions 3.8-5.7cm. (1 1/2-2 1/4")
Breeding April-June. 5-17 eggs laid under moss. Female guards nest. Hatches after 5-7 weeks. Mature in 2 years.
Habitat Temperate forests, intermittent rivers, and freshwater springs.
Range North Carolina through Alabama.
Discussion Species formerly included Cherokee & Alabama Salamanders. Cherokee has reddish brown straight edged stripes. Alabama has wavy stripes in yellow/tan. Hides under forest litter. Diet includes springtails, beetle larvae & mites.
