Description Small ground squirrel colored plain gray above with pinkish tinge; whitish or buff belly Tail short, reddish or tawny below, with white edge. Reddish face and hind legs.

Habitat Scrub, shrub & brushlands, Deserts


Range Rocky Mountains, Southwest, California, Northwest


Discussion Hibernates from June till February. Uses sagebrush and agricultural areas north of the Columbia River and south of the Yakima River. Has 36 chromosomes.
