Description A familiar animal to most, wild horses in North American are descended from domesticated horses. Large animals with long snout, mane, large, semi-circular, uncloven hooves and long tail. Western race larger than Assateague (East Coast) race found along Atlantic barrier islands.

Dimensions Height: 1.42-1.52 m; Wt: 270-390 kg

Breeding Gestation lasts for approximately 335-340 days and usually results in one foal. Twins are rare. Horses are a precocial species, and foals are capable of standing and running within a short time following birth.

Discussion These feral populations are not true wild horses, as this term is used to describe horses that have never been domesticated, such as the endangered Przewalski's Horse, a separate subspecies, and the only remaining true wild horse.
