Family: Asteraceae, Aster view all from this family

Description Yellow daisylike flower heads on tall, hairy stems; plant often has 1-sided, unbalanced look.
Flowers: heads 1/2—3/4” (1.3—2 cm) wide.
Leaves: alternate, oblong; basal ones 2—3” (5—7.5 cm) long, stalked; upper ones smaller, wavy-edged, clasping stem.
Height: 1—3’ (30—90 cm).

Flower July—November

Habitat Sandy soils of prairies, waste places, and roadsides.

Range New Jersey and Delaware south to Florida; west to Texas, north to Kansas and Illinois.

Discussion This native annual or biennial has been extending its range northward. It is unpalatable to grazing livestock on open range.
