Family: Asteraceae, Aster view all from this family

Description Slender stalk above leafy mat.
Flowers: tiny tufts of minute white bristles, surrounded by pink- or white-tipped, greenish-based papery bracts; in rounded, 1" (2.5 cm) clusters. Bloom May–August.
Leaves oblanceolate, whitish-woolly, mostly basal.
Height: 10" (25 cm).

Habitat Dry, open areas, meadows, open woods and forests, plains, alpine meadows.

Range Alaska and British Columbia to Manitoba; Newfoundland; rare in rest of eastern Canada. In United States, south to California, New Mexico, North Dakota, and Minnesota; also in Maine. Extirpated from Michigan.
