Flowers: about 1" (2.5 cm) wide; sepals 3, lanceolate; petals 3, broad, slightly longer than sepals, densely hairy on surface, often with a purple crescent near base above the gland, on whose lower side is a fringed membrane.
Leaves: 4-8" (10-20 cm) long.
Height: 2-8" (5-20 cm).

Flower May-June.

Habitat Grassy hillsides and open coniferous woods.

Discussion The name Star Tulip refers to the flower's shape and Cat's Ears to the petal's resemblance to a kitten's ear. Similar species are distinguished by characteristics of the gland and pod.
