Description Large, white, funnel-shaped flowers bloom in a stout raceme above long, narrow, basal leaves with wavy edges.
Flowers: to 2 1/2" (6.3 cm) long; 6 petal-like segments, each with a bluish-green band on back.
Leaves: 8-20" (20-50 cm) long.
Height: 1-6' (30-180 cm).
Flower March-May.
Habitat Sandy desert flats and gentle slopes.
Range Southeastern California, western Arizona, and northwestern Mexico.
Discussion Conspicuous and easily seen as one drives desert roads, it seems at first glance an Easter Lily out of place. The bulbs of this species, the only one in its genus, were once used by Indians for food.
