Description At top of stout, erect, generally unbranched stems bloom 1-3 handsome bell-shaped, lilac flowers in a loose umbel-like cluster.
Flowers: 1 1/2-2 1/2" (3.8-6.3 cm) wide; sepals 3, narrowly lanceolate, slightly longer than petals; petals 3, broad, fan-shaped, each with a greenish stripe down middle; oblong gland near base of each petal is surrounded by a fringed membrane and often marked above by a deep lilac, crescent-shaped patch.
Leaves: 2-4" (5-10 cm) long, several on the stem, very narrow, usually curled at tip.
Height: 8-20" (20-50 cm).
Flower May-August.
Habitat Loose, dry soil on plains, among sagebrush, and in yellow pine forests.
Range The eastern side of the Cascade Mountains from southern British Columbia to northern California; east to northern Nevada and across central and northern Idaho to western Montana.
Discussion One of the most frequent Mariposa Tulips in the arid Northwest. A white phase with a reddish stripe on each petal occurs in southeastern Washington and adjacent west-central Idaho.
