Family: Trochidae, Top Shells view all from this family

Description 5/8-1 1/4" (1.6-3.2 cm) high, slightly narrower. Sharply conical, thin; yellow, with a pale purplish or mauve band at angled periphery and around umbilical area; beads regularly spotted with orange, tip often pinkish. Whorls flat, with numerous spiral rows of strongly beaded cords. Body whorls sharply angled. Base flattened, with many weakly beaded cords. Umbilicus absent. Aperture ovate to almost round.

Habitat On kelp or rocks among kelp, intertidally in northern part of its range, and in water to 100' (30 m) deep farther south.

Range Southern Alaska to northern Baja California.

Discussion Also known as the Ringed Top Shell, this species is more common in the north, where it is often found on the blades of kelp. The animal is bright orange.
