Description 1" (25 mm) long, 7/8" (22 mm) wide. Carapace oval, flattened, almost circular. Reddish-brown, legs banded near tips. Pincers large, equal; length of joint next to hand less than twice width, margins not parallel, lobe on inner margin nearest body. 5th pair of walking legs folded up between carapace and abdomen. Abdomen turned under body.

Habitat Under stones and in spaces between shells, in mussel beds, among sponges and tunicates; between high- and low-tide lines.

Range British Columbia to s. California.

Discussion This is one of the most common crustaceans between high- and low-tide lines, especially in mussel beds.
