Description 4 5/8" (117 mm) long, 3/4" (19 mm) high. Long, slender. Whitish, with yellow swimmerets and yellow bristles. Carapace 1/3 length of abdomen, transparent on sides, gills visible. Base of antennae half as long as carapace, entire antennae as long as carapace. 1st pair of walking legs unequal, with pincers, one huge in adult male.
Habitat Burrowing in mud on flats, in bays and estuaries; between high- and low-tide lines.
Range S. Alaska to Baja California.
Discussion This species burrows through loose sandy mud, and may dig down more than 24" (61 cm) from the surface. Its burrow attracts numerous commensals.
