Description 1" (25 mm) high, 1" (25 mm) wide. Conical, flat at top. Ivory-white. Sides composed of 2 pairs of limy plates overlapping only 1 of 2 unpaired plates. 2 pairs of grooved plates at top with gape between. Side plates smooth. Base limy and full of hollow tubes.

Habitat On rocks and pilings in bays and estuaries; near low-tide line and below in shallow water.

Range Maine to South America.

Discussion This is the common estuarine barnacle. It occurs in brackish habitats almost into fresh water.
