Description Gray above, sometimes with darker stripe down back; white below. Tail short, dark on top. L 4 1/3-5 3/4" (108-145 mm); T 1 5/8 -2 3/8" (40-60 mm).
Endangered Status The Alabama Beach Mouse, a subspecies of the Oldfield Mouse, is on the U.S. Endangered Species List. It is classified as endangered in Alabama. The decline of this mouse has been attributed to the impact of coastal development, recreational activity, and tropical storms on its fragile coastline habitat. It survives in only one small strip of Gulf shoreline in Alabama, whereas it once ranged into Florida.
