Family: Soricidae, Shrews view all from this family

Description Grayish to brownish above; slightly paler below. Long, distinctly bicolored tail, dark above; nearly white below. White feet. Third unicuspid smaller than fourth. L 4 1/4–5 1/4" (110–132 mm); T 1 7/8–2 3/8" (48–62 mm); HF 1/2–5/8" (12–15 mm); Wt 3/4 oz (6–9 g).

Breeding Little is known; in British Columbia, first litter born late April– early May.

Habitat Mature forests of West Coast.

Range Extreme sw British Columbia south through w Washington, w Oregon, and much of California.

Discussion This small shrew feeds upon various insects and other invertebrates as well as seeds, especially those of the Douglas fir. Individuals reach maturation in February, just before the breeding season, which extends through May. Most individuals probably live no longer than 18 months.
