Family: Soricidae, Shrews view all from this family

Description Gray above and below. Short tail. Total length seldom over 4" (100 mm). L 3 1/2– 6" (88–151 mm); T 3/4–1 1/8" (19–28 mm); HF 3/8–3/4" (11–20 mm); Wt 1/8–3/4 oz (5.5–22 g).

Warning The shrews of the genus Blarina are unique among mammals in producing poison in their salivary glands. The saliva is not dangerous to humans, but a bite may swell and be painful for several days.

Habitat Primarily woodlands.

Range Southeastern U.S.: s Nebraska and s Illinois south to Gulf of Mexico; east of Appalachians from Maryland south to Florida.

Discussion Little is known of the habits of this species; they are probably similar to those of the Northern Short-tailed Shrew.
