Family: Pentatomidae, Stink Bugs view all from this family
Description The Brochymena Stink Bug is a member of the family Pentatomidae. Stink bugs get their common name from the copious amounts of foul-smelling fluid they discharge when disturbed. Both adults and nymphs possess large stink glands on the undersurface, opening through conspicuous slits. All of these medium- to large-sized bugs, usually 1/4-3/4" (6-20 mm) long, have 5-segmented antennae -- the first segment thick, the second slender. The membranous part of the fore wing has many branching veins. A minority of stink bugs prey upon caterpillars and herbivorous larvae of beetles, sucking their juices instead of plant sap. Eggs of stink bugs are often shiny, barrel-shaped, and armed with spines. They are attached to leaf surfaces in small masses resembling the cells of honeycombs.
