Family: Ephemeridae, Burrowing Mayflies view all from this family

Description The Western Green Drake is a member of the midboreal mayflies family (family Ephemerellidae). Mostly brownish mayflies, members of this family measure 1/4-3/4 (5-19 mm) long, excluding the 3 tail filaments. They are distinguished from other mayflies by details of wing venation. Naiads are either carrot-shaped or flattened. They have broad, flattened femora and often have tubercles on the head, thorax, and abdomen. Well-developed gills appear on abdominal segments 4-7 or 3-7, but those on segment 1 are rudimentary. North American midboreal mayflies are found near rapid streams or small clear lakes.
