Family: Acrididae, Short-horned Grasshoppers view all from this family

Description 1 1/8-1 3/4" (28-44 mm). Shiny brownish yellow. Antennae brownish yellow or red. Hind femora yellow with a black herringbone pattern. Hind tibiae yellow with black toothlike spines, all tarsi yellowish. Glossy pronotum and fore wings. Male's cerci have a prominent projection at side.

Food Grasses if available; crop plants and fruits.

Life Cycle Female presses 8 egg masses, each with up to 11 eggs, into soft soil. 1 generation in early summer.

Habitat Grasslands and open woods.

Range Throughout the United States.

Discussion These grasshoppers do not migrate and are often destructive.
