Family: Acrididae, Short-horned Grasshoppers view all from this family

Description 1 1/4-1 5/8" (31-41 mm). Grayish to brownish or reddish. Fore wings with 1 or 2 black crossbands. Hind wings whitish to yellow except for dark edge. Hind tibiae yellow or yellowish brown.

Food Herbaceous plants on range and arid land.

Life Cycle Up to 12 egg masses, with 100 eggs each, are deposited in soft soil. Eggs overwinter, hatch in late spring. Nymphs become adults by June in the South or October in the North. 1 generation a year.

Habitat Many different habitats, sea level to 9,150' (2,789 m), including areas of alkaline soil.

Range Manitoba to Oklahoma, Mexico to British Columbia.

Discussion The related Seaside Grasshopper (T. maritima), 3/4-1 3/8" (19-34 mm), has a pale brown to pale gray body, finely speckled with black; buff to pink hind tibiae; and pale yellow hind wings edged with dark gray. It often snuggles into beach sand along the Atlantic Coast and the Great Lakes.
