Family: Nymphalidae, Brush-footed Butterflies view all from this family
Description 1 5/8-1 7/8" (41-48 mm). Pale orange over much of HW and FW above, with brown patches near HW base; FW tip has brown patches with white spots. Beneath, FW orange at base, HW mottled with pale sandy gray-brown areas and striations. FW extended, squared at tip. Prominent snout, 1/4" (6 mm).
Similar Species Snout Butterfly has brighter orange, more confined light patches; HW margins are scalloped and mottled purplish gray-brown beneath.
Life Cycle Unrecorded. Host plants probably hackberries (Celtis).
Flight Most of year.
Habitat Canyons, partially wooded draws, hilly scrub, and desert washes.
Range Arizona and Texas south to Paraguay, occasionally emigrating as far north as Kansas.
Discussion Both snout species take part in emigratory flights of millions of butterflies that carry individuals farther north than they normally occur. These mass flights seem to be related to population pressures. No return migration follows.
