Description ADULT Has olive-green upperparts; note the whitish eyering and pale pinkish orange lower mandible. Wings are dark with pale fringes to inner flight feathers and two striking white wing bars. Underparts are yellowish, with darker olive wash across breast. JUVENILE Similar, but brighter, with buffy yellow wing bars.

Dimensions Length: 5 1/2" (14 cm)

Habitat Widespread and common summer visitor (mainly Jun-Aug) to northern forests, favoring areas of dense spruce in particular. Winters in Central and South America.

Observation Tips Easily overlooked and its presence is best detected by its voice.

Voice Song is a sharp, chirping, and disyllabic ch'Week; call is a whistling ch'wee.

Discussion Distinctive, but unobtrusive "empid" that favors deep shade; often first detected by its voice. Usually adopts an upright posture when perched. Head looks proportionately large and tail relatively short. Sexes are similar.
