Family: Trochilidae, Hummingbirds view all from this family

Description 4 1/2" (11 cm). Green above with glittering green throat, brown tail, and tawny or rich buff belly. Bill long and thin, bright orange-red with black tip.

Habitat Woodland borders and thickets.

Nesting 2 white eggs in woven nest of plant fibers decorated with lichens, saddled to the limb of a tree or shrub.

Range Breeds in lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas. Rare in winter there and elsewhere along Gulf Coast. 

Voice   Shrill squeaks.

Discussion This mainly Mexican species may be found among dense tangled thickets and vines in light, open woodlands. It also feeds on flowers in gardens. Unlike most other hummers north of Mexico, the sexes are alike in color. It usually leaves the Rio Grande area in winter and retires southward into adjacent Mexico until the following spring.
