Family: Parulidae, Wood Warblers view all from this family

Description 4 1/2" (11 cm). Male has sky-blue head and back; black band across white breast. Female is dull blue-gray above and whitish below, and lacks breast band.

Habitat Open woodlands, often near streams and rivers.

Nesting 4 brown-spotted whitish eggs in a nest of plant fibers lined with grass, moss, and hair, and placed high in a deciduous tree, generally near the end of a branch.

Range Breeds from southeastern Minnesota, southern Ontario, and western New England south to Texas, Louisiana, and northern Gulf Coast states. Winters in tropics.

Voice   Series of short buzzy notes, followed by a higher-pitched buzz.

Discussion This species has a discontinuous range, occurring here and there in rather loose colonies. It is usually found high in the treetops, where it is difficult to see in the thick foliage.
