Family: Vireonidae, Vireos view all from this family
Description 6" (15 cm). Sparrow-sized. Bright yellow throat, breast, and "spectacles"; 2 conspicuous white wing bars, olive green head and back, gray rump, white belly.
Habitat Tall deciduous trees at the edge of forests, along streams, roadsides, orchards, and parks.
Nesting 4 brown-blotched pinkish eggs in a cup-shaped nest of lichens, mosses, and grasses decorated and lined with spiderweb silk and egg cases, and set in a forked branch well up in a tree.
Range Breeds from Manitoba, Minnesota, Ontario, and central New England south to Gulf Coast states. Winters in tropics, with a few in southern Florida.
Voice Similar to song of Red-eyed and Solitary vireos, but lower in pitch and with a husky or burry quality to the phrases.
Discussion These handsome vireos are found mainly in open groves of tall hardwood trees. Their numbers have decreased in recent years because of the spraying of trees with toxic chemicals.
