Family: Microhylidae, Narrow-mouthed Frogs view all from this family

Description 7/8-1 5/8" (2.2-4.1 cm). Small, plump, smooth-skinned, with egg-shaped body, pointed snout, and fold of skin across back of head. Gray to olive, with scattered black flecks. Abdomen lacks mottling. Single spade on each hind foot. Male has dark throat.

Voice   High-pitched buzzing bleat.

Breeding March to September, when heavy rains create favorable water levels. Eggs are laid as a surface film.

Habitat Montane woodlands, grasslands, and desert from sea level to 4,000' (1,200 m). Moist or damp areas from marshes to leaf litter and rodent burrows.

Range In a band from e. Nebraska and w. Missouri through Oklahoma and Texas into Mexico, west through n. Mexico into sc. Arizona.

Discussion Nocturnal. This toad often shares the burrow of a tarantula (where the two apparently live in harmony), a lizard, or a mole. It feeds primarily on ants.
