Family: Ranidae, True Frogs view all from this family

Description 1 7/8-3" (4.8-7.6 cm). Uniformly olive to brown, or with dark spots or mottling on sides and hind legs. Large eardrum. Has pungent, musky, minklike odor. Belly yellowish. Dorsolateral ridges vary from prominent to absent. Webbing on hind foot reaches last joint of longest toe. Eyes turned slightly upward. Male has swollen thumbs.

Voice   Low-pitched, metallic croak. Males call while floating or seated on lily pads.

Breeding June to August. Egg masses are attached to submerged vegetation.

Habitat At home in cold waters where vegetation is abundant; especially partial to water lilies. Also found near edges of ponds or lakes with emergent vegetation or peaty bottoms.

Range In Canada from Manitoba to Labrador and the Maritime Provinces, south along the St. Lawrence River to n. New York, west to n. Minnesota.

Discussion Primarily nocturnal. At night males can be found squatting on lily pads far from shore. During the day they usually hide in the vegetation on shore.
