Family: Plethodontidae, Lungless Salamanders view all from this family

Description 3 7/8-5 7/8" (9.8-15 cm). Mottled greenish-yellow back stripe does not reach tail tip; sometimes all dark brown and unstriped. Sides dark brown or black with small light flecks. Small, scattered yellowish spots on belly. Costal grooves,usually 15.

Breeding Deposits cluster of 6-18 eggs in late spring to early winter.

Habitat Moist, shaded rocky areas, such as wet talus rubble, spring seepages, shale or sandstone outcrops along streams; from sea level to 2,500' (762 m).

Range Extreme sw. Washington south through w. Oregon to extreme nw. California.

Discussion This salamander is especially common under stones in saturated areas. It takes to water when disturbed. Oregon Ensatina and Larch Mountain salamanders share its habitat. It eats mites, springtails, flies, and small snails.
