Family: Dicamptodontidae, Giant Salamanders view all from this family

Description 7-10 1/4" (17-25 cm). Robust and smooth-skinned. Brown above, with fine dark spots or mottling. Belly light brown to grayish. No foot tubercles; 3 segments on 4th toe of hind foot. Costal grooves, 12-13, indistinct.

Breeding Little is known.

Habitat Small streams and their vicinity in cool, humid forests.

Range Rocky Mountains in nc. Idaho and extreme wc. Montana.

Discussion This salamander was formerly considered a subspecies of D. ensatus, which has been split into three separate species: The Idaho Giant Salamander, the Pacific Giant Salamander (D. tenebrosus), and the California Giant Salamander (D. ensatus). The other two are distributed farther west, from British Columbia to central California.
