Description 7 1/2-12 1/2" (19.0-31.7 cm). Eyes light orange to pink. Distinct fold along sides. Brown; prominent crossbands on back. Spots and bars on belly; no stripes. Black and white spots on upper lip. Young brightly crossbanded.
Subspecies Three; 1 in our range: Arizona Alligator Lizard (E. k. nobilis).
Breeding Lays 9-12 eggs at a time, June to July.
Habitat High dry grasslands, open woods of fir, pine, or chaparral; 5,000-7,000' (1,500-2,100 m).
Range Se. Arizona and sw. New Mexico, south into Mexico along the Sierra Madre Occidental.
Discussion Diurnal. This lizard is primarily a ground dweller. It is active throughout the day.
