Family: Hylidae, Treefrogs view all from this family

Description 1 1/4-2 1/4" (3.2-5.7 cm). Plump and warty, with a toadlike appearance. Olive to brownish-gray, with darker blotches present in most populations. Dark-edged light spot beneath eye. Under surfaces of thigh yellow to orange. Large toe pads; webbing does not extend to tip of fifth toe of hind foot. Male has gray to black throat.

Voice An explosive, rather hollow and nasal series of notes, all of one tone and lasting 1-3 seconds.

Breeding Usually March to July; may be delayed until adequate rain falls.

Habitat Arid areas close to rocky washes, streams, and permanent pools.

Range From s. Utah to c. Colorado, south into Mexico. Isolated populations in ne. New Mexico and the Big Bend region of Texas.

Discussion Primarily nocturnal; often seen along water courses. During the day it can be found hiding among rocks or in stony crevices near streams, camouflaged by its color.
