Family: Plethodontidae, Lungless Salamanders view all from this family
Description 4 -4 1/2" (10 - 11.3 cm). A dark brown to blackish salamander with a red, orange, yellow, or green, scalloped-edged stripe down its back and tail. Lower sides of body and bases of legs flecked with small light spots. Undersides of body dark except for yellow throat. Young resemble adults. Costal grooves, 14-15.
Breeding Mating can occur from late summer through spring, with most in late summer and fall. Females apparently lay eggs in April and May.
Habitat Streams, mountain seeps, waterfall splash zones, and talus slopes at 1,500-5,000' (457-1,524 m).
Range Southeastern British Columbia, northern Idaho, and northwestern Montana.
Discussion This salamander is quite uncommon and has a spotty distribution, even within its rather limited range. It used to be considered a subspecies of Van Dyke's Salamander (Plethodon vandykei), which is found in forests of w. Washington.
