Family: Ranidae, True Frogs view all from this family

Description 1 3/4-2 5/16" (4.4-7.5 cm). Small, olive to brown, with black spots on back and legs. Dorsolateral folds present. Dark mask bordered by light jaw stripe. Eardrum smooth. Underside yellow, becoming more intense posteriorly. Toes not fully webbed.

Voice A low-pitched, raspy series of 4-6 notes a second.

Breeding May to August.

Habitat Mountain meadows, streams, ponds, and lakes above 3,000' (900 m), in the water and vegetation around it.

Range In the Olympic Mts. of Washington and Cascade Mts. of Washington, Oregon, and n. California. To 9,000' (2,700 m) near timberline.

Discussion Diurnal. It is frequently seen preying on insects or basking on a rock in or near the water. When threatened, it swims away instead of diving and hiding.
