Description Orange/red with brownish/tan spots & blotches that form an X on back.
Dimensions 1.9-3.5cm. (3/4-1 3/8")
Subspecies Northern - underside unmarked. Similar range except Georgia and Florida.
Southern - spotted underside. Georgia to Florida.
Voice High pitched whistle or trill.
Breeding November-March in south. March-June in north, at the beginning of rains.
Habitat Swampy woods.
Range c. Florida - Manitoba & Maritime Provinces. also Texas & n. Wisconsin.
Discussion Nocturnal. It's chorus thought to be one of the first signs of spring. Hibernates under logs and bark.
