Description 24-50" (61-127 cm). Slender; plain green, greenish-gray, or olive, with an unmarked yellow-tinged white or cream belly. Elongated head with long squarish snout. Scales faintly keeled, in 25 or more rows. Anal plate divided.
Subspecies Three; 1 in our range: Northern (E. t. intermedia); Baboquivari, Pajarito, Santa Rita, and Chiricahua Mountains, se. Arizona into Mexico.
Breeding Habits poorly known. Presumably lays 5 or more smooth white eggs, 2" (51 mm) long, in late summer or early fall.
Habitat Vicinity of streams in wooded rocky canyon bottoms in mountainous areas; ca. 1,500-7,000' (450-2,150 m).
Range E. Arizona, south through Mexico into Costa Rica.
Discussion Rarely seen in United States. Active on the ground during the cooler parts of the day. An excellent climber, it presumably spends much of the day in trees and bushes. It feeds on birds and small mammals.
