Family: Leptoyyphlopidae, Slender Blind Snakes view all from this family

Description 5-6 1/2" (12.5-16.25 cm). A tiny, slender wormlike snake with a short, blunt tail. Gray, brown, or black with a lighter belly.

Habitat Shady gardens and areas with loose moist soils.

Range Introduced to southern Florida and Hawaii.

Discussion These tiny snakes, which may be only a couple of inches long, resemble earthworms, although their bodies are not ringed the way those of worms are, nor can they stretch out and retract like worms. Native to southeast Asia, they have been imported in the soil of exotic plants to many tropical areas of the globe. They feed on ants and termites.
