Family: Gekkonidae, Geckos view all from this family

Description 4-4 3/4" (10-12 cm). Sleepy-looking lizard with protruding white-rimmed eyelids. Skin supple; back scales uniformly granular. Pinkish with dark brown crossbands, most evident in juveniles, breaking up with age into nearly uniform mottling. Preanal pores in male separate at midline. Toes slender, no pads. Females larger.

Voice Squeaks when alarmed.

Breeding Clutches of 2 eggs, laid April to June.

Habitat Rock outcrops and canyon beds in desert areas. Found beneath shelving rocks, vegetative debris, and discarded boards.

Range S. New Mexico through s. Texas (almost to coast) and ne. Mexico.

Discussion Nocturnal. Most easily encountered crossing highways during nightly movements. This gecko feeds on insects and small spiders which it stalks with a feline twitching of the tail. It eats its shed skin: loose skin is grasped in the jaws, pulled free of the body, then chewed and swallowed.
