Family: Plethodontidae, Lungless Salamanders view all from this family

Description 3 1/8-5 1/2" (7.9-14 cm). Black above, with green or greenish-yellow patches. Head looks swollen behind eyes. Toe tips expanded, squarish. Costal grooves, 14-15.

Breeding May to August. Cluster of 10-20 sticky eggs is suspended in crevice by short mucus strands. Female broods eggs until they hatch; 12-13 weeks. Hatchlings are 7/8" (22 mm).

Habitat Damp, but not wet, sheltered, narrow crevices along face of sandstone outcrop; also underneath loose bark of rotting hardwood trees and stumps. To 4,400' (1,341 m).

Range Extreme sw. Pennsylvania through Allegheny and Cumberland mountains to c. Alabama; Blue Ridge Mountains of North and South Carolina.

Discussion Nocturnal; it hides in rock crevices or rotting trees by day. By night it climbs about on vertical surfaces, seeking beetles, mosquitoes, and ants. Hatchlings look like miniature adults.
