Family: Salamandridae, Newts view all from this family

Description 2 1/8-3 1/8" (5.2-7.9 cm). Small, slender, aquatic salamander, with 2 red stripes running down body, often broken on head and tail. Olive-green to dark brown above; belly yellow, with sparse black specks. A few red spots on sides. Land-dwelling eft is orange-red but striped like adult.

Breeding Late winter to spring.

Habitat Flatwoods, hammock ponds, and drainage ditches.

Range S. Georgia to c. Florida.

Discussion Efts are commonly found in woodlands near breeding ponds after a downpour. Sexually mature larvae with gills are occasionally seen in ponds, along with similarly sized aquatic adults, fully transformed and lacking gills.
