Description Stout. Brown-grayish above with dark brown/black streaks and blotches. Some have darker ridges. Tail tip pointed. 14 costal grooves.
Dimensions 7.6-14.9cm. (3-5 7/8")
Breeding June-October. Females guard nest after laying 1-3 dozen eggs under rocks in seepages. Hatch in September.
Habitat Mountain Stream banks.
Range Pennsylvania through c. & sw. Alabama uplands.
Discussion Dwells in stream banks. Always near water, flees to it when disturbed. Hides under rocks. Diet includes ants & beetles.
