Family: Ranidae, True Frogs view all from this family



Description Green or grey-green in color, brown or black blotching. They have fully webbed feet, a sharply pointed nose, and a large ears tympanum. Cream underside.


Dimensions 8-16.2cm. (3 1/4-6 3/8")


Voice Piglike grunt.


Breeding March-September. Laid in large masses, up to 10,000 at a time. Floats on surface of water.


Habitat Edges of lakes, or in cypress swamps and marshes that are heavy with vegetation.


Range South Carolina, Florida, Texas & Gulf.


Discussion Nocturnal. Otherwise known as Souther Bullfrog. Legs are thought to be a delicacy. Very wary of lamps used by hunters. Spends most of its time among floating hyacinth and cattails. Crayfish forms most of its diet.
