Description Hair on the belly is white at both the base and the tip. Back is brown, grayish or tawny; edge of the wing membrane is blackish.

Breeding Nests are found in tree holes, or constructed of leaves and Spanish moss.

Habitat Forests & woodlands

Range Plains, Great Lakes, New England, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, Florida, Texas, Eastern Canada

Discussion Forage in trees and on the ground for lichens, fungi, sap, flowers, buds, bark, seeds, nuts, fruits, and animal matter including insects, birds, mammals, and carrion. Common in low-elevation hardwood forests, less so in mixed and coniferous forests. Also found in parks and wooded residential areas.
