Family: Sciuridae, Squirrels view all from this family



Description Large chipmunk with a bushy tail. Contrasting dorsal stripes are light gray and brown. Duller, but very similar to California Chipmunk. Edging on tail is buff-colored, not white like in the Long-eared Chipmunk. Darker on coast. .


Dimensions 240-255mm, 100-115mm, 70-80g


Similar Species Distinguished from Townsend’s Chipmunk by having gray (not brown) cheeks.


Habitat Forests & woodlands, Scrub, shrub & brushlands, Alpine & subalpine habitats


Range California


Discussion Calls with “chips” and a trill from elevated perches in pine and oak forests
