Track Similar to those of the Red Squirrel, but slightly smaller; in snow, it is nearly impossible to distinguish tracks of the two species. Hindprints are about 1 1/2" (37 mm) long, with 5 toes showing; foreprints are about 3/4" (20 mm) long, with 4 toes showing. Trail often blurred by fold of skin between front and hind legs. Animal landing on snow leaves distinctive print showing all 4 feet and folds of skin.
Sign Hickory nuts with one or two smooth edged openings, (Red Squirrels make a ragged opening, and fox and gray squirrels crush the nut). Usually lives in tree cavities, but may make summer nest of leaves, smaller than Gray Squirrel's.
